History of a city fez

Fez The city of Fez: Fez or Fez (فاس in Arabic) is the third largest city in Morocco after Casablanca and Rabat with a population of 1 368 000 inhabitants. This is one of four "imperial cities" (with Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat). It has the largest medina in the world.

Its international reputation in the past was one of the capitals of Muslim civilization along with Damascus, Baghdad, Cordoba, Granada ... According to the legend, the city name comes from the discovery of a pick (Arabic: فاس [FA's] pick) to the location of the first foundations. 

Fez, spiritual and cultural capital

Cultural and spiritual capital of Morocco, Fez is an ancient city. In the months to come, we can easily get carried away throughout its history, with its many mosques, mederas, fondouq, fountains …. In recent years many buildings have been restored.

Quaraouiyine

Al (Quaraouiyine القرويين) Arabic (literally "the mosque of Kairouan) is one of the largest mosques in Morocco. Its construction began in 857 in Fez, in the reign of Dynasty Idrisid. Throughout the centuries, the mosque sees architecture evolve and expand. She became the tenth to twelfth century, a major teaching center and one of the first universities in the world.

The Madrasah al Attarin

 

This small madrasa is considered one of the most beautiful schods in of Fez. Built in 1325 by Sultan Abu Said, it contains art treasures Merinid. The roof of the madrasa provides an interesting perspective on the patio of the nearby mosque Karaouiyne, and allows to observe life on the terraces of the city.

The tanning

Visiting the area of the Tanners is most impressive. The craftsmen are barefoot in vats of dye most natural. The skins were first removing their hair in lime baths for weeks. The wonderful spectacle of this work can be seen at the top of shops tanners. Accept the mint leaves has the entry proposed by the trader to endure the stench that you'll face above the tanks! Beware buying slippers, bags or cushions know that leather fassien easily loses its smell and definitely by what is done well ...
