Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for high speed automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). A possibility to increase the throughput of AS/RS rarely considered so far is the use of more than one I/O point in order to reduce the mean travel distance between I/O and storage locations. In this paper con- cepts for the alignment of multiple I/O points and strategies for their optimal use are presented. Since no suitable calculation methods for most of those concepts and strategies are available, a simulation model has been developed for their evaluation in terms of cycle times. The simulation results are compared with those of AS/RS with a single I/O point in order to show the benefit of the new concepts.
