Modelling of intermodal networks

Authors:   Karl Etlinger, Edith Schindlbacher, Manfred Gronalt

Abstract

This work presents an approach to support intermodalnetwork planning and evaluation by providing aframework of methods for terminal location planningand operational network design. Therefore a mixedinteger linear programming model is introduced tooptimize the network structure and determine the locations for operating intermodal terminals as well asthe type of terminal to be estabilished. This optimization approach is supposed to be combinedwith simulation techniques in order to provide a comprehensive planning and evaluation approach forintermodal transportation networksWithin our work the developed methods and models arealso implemented for a case study with test data basedon major European transport corridors and future priority axes for freight transportation in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries
