Producing natural roofing slates is a highly wasteful activity.Depending on commercial formats, only a 3% ofmaterial extracted from quarry becomes final product.Processing a block of slate weighing several tons into atile of slate only a few millimetres thick requires greatenergy consumption as well as the use of an importantlevel of resources, both human and material. The wholeprocess is subject to the intrinsic variability of naturalproducts which determines its reactive nature. In thispaper, we present our work for the global improvementof a natural roofing slates manufacturing plant. To doso, a Modelling and Simulation approach has beenadopted. Developing a Discrete Event Simulation(DES) model of such a high dynamic, variable and labour-intensive process has been proposed as a systematicway for its characterization and analysis.
