The fourth industrial revolution has recently introduced a new paradigm in industry where advanced technologies such Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data Analytics (BDA) are exploited to strengthen the value chain of renewed business models based on digitized information. With its high degree of networking and its large number of interfaces, maritime industry offers a broad range of applications for digital technologies thus providing a great potential for the development of new industrial paradigm. In this paradigm, complex cyber-physical systems known as “smart ships”, characterized by new design criteria and operational requirements, will be the promoters of a smart maritime ecosystem with enhanced efficiency and sustainability. Such systems will involve real time performance monitoring, data mining and decision making in a renewed managerial approach towards the maritime value chain.
This track session aims at hosting a selection of papers from researchers, academics and practitioners to provide a multi-faceted insight on the application of Industry 4.0 principles in the shipping domain (aka Shipping 4.0)
