Project overview
- SMILE is a Italian National Research Project involving three major partners: Baker Hughes, University of Calabria and 3D Research srl. The SMILE project aims to significantly contribute to the Italian industry by promoting a flexible, robust, and efficient factory model empowered by extensive use of digital technologies.
- In response to the challenges posed by international markets and the increasing need for product customization, SMILE supports enterprises in adopting innovative approaches and competencies essential for Industry 4.0. The project's core objective is the transformation of traditional manufacturing plants into interconnected and intelligent systems defined as "Brilliant Factories."

Project results
- Innovative digital factory solutions: transforming Oil & Gas manufacturing into 4.0 smart factories.
- Best practices for industry: defining methodologies in predictive maintenance, real-time process monitoring, production planning, and enterprise-level knowledge management
- Prototypes and demonstrators: implementing and validating cutting-edge technologies in realistic industrial environments.
- Real-time decision support tools: delivering advanced simulation-based systems to improve production control.
- Predictive models and control systems: developing real-time monitoring solutions to achieve zero-defect manufacturing.
- Knowledge-Based Engineering (KBE) and Augmented Reality (AR): creating intelligent systems to capture, store, and share operational knowledge directly from the shop floor.
